Iraqi Kurd PUK MP, 2 mp kurd and ADVISOR TO KRG  BELIEVED TO HAVE SOUGHT ASYLUM IN CANADA

SULAIMANI — A member from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Kurdistan Parliament and an advisor to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister are both believed to have sought political asylum in Canada.

According to information obtained by NRT, Sirwan Zahawi, an advisor to KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, has arrived with his family in Canada and sought political asylum after he appealed to the International Red Cross over alleged threats he says he faces in the Kurdistan Region.

Zahawi said threats were leveled against him earlier in July in a post to his official Facebook account, stating he received threats after he filed against corruption cases and called for reform.

Barzani appointed Zahawi as the head of an anti-corruption committee in the Kurdistan Region’s health sector. He is the former head of a committee to amend the Kurdistan Region’s constitution and is a former MP in the Iraqi Parliament.

Gorran Azad, a PUK MP in the Kurdistan Parliament, arrived in the United States on an alleged medical trip for his child. He reportedly later traveled to Canada where he sought political asylum.

A PUK member in the Kurdistan Parliament, Saed Masifi, said in a statement Azad is on a medical trip abroad and is not seeking asylum. According to the PUK official, Azad will return to the Kurdistan Region as soon as possible after his child has received treatment.
