Insp. Dieter Boeheim, from the service’s intelligence bureau, said he’s aware of some angst in portions of the Richmond Hill community following allegations that explosive materials and a detonator were found in a family’s home near Bathurst Street and Elgin Mills Road.
Reza Mohammadiasl, 47, and his son Mahyar, 18, were charged with one count each of possession of an explosive substance on May 13 and then released on $50,000 bail each on May 17.
For Boeheim, the problem with releasing information about the probe remains his lack of knowledge about what exactly the police are dealing with.We have a large inventory of chemicals, all different types of chemicals,” he said. “You can mix them and produce explosives and drugs or soaps and perfumes. The crux is for us to figure out why does he have all these chemicals? We haven’t been able to link that with any ideology for good or bad or for sale, pleasure or hobby or anything. That’s what we’re trying to figure out, we’re not trying to hide anything.”
As for the device, again, he said it’s complicated.
“The device … it’s considered an explosive device, but it’s not a device that explodes,” he added. “To link it to extremism would not be proper.”
